Sheridan HVAC (originally Sheridan Heating of Newmarket Ontario) has been installing and servicing residential and commercial HVAC systems since the late 1950's.

We continue to provide high-quality services, now in the Niagara area. Our team of highly experienced and TSSA-licensed technicians will serve all of your HVAC needs.

What We Do

Are you building or renovating and need a good plan for the new heating, cooling or ventilation system? Is your old heating/cooling system broken or running so inefficiently that operating costs have been rising for years? Or do you need system design and installation support for your next major project? Whether for new construction or modernization, together we will find the new heating system that suits your needs. Sheridan HVAC offers a full range of services for residential HVAC systems. We offer preventive inspection and maintenance services, as well as diagnostic and repair services.

Ductwork Fabrication and Installation

We produce high-quality rectangular ductwork in our own shop. We have been fabricating custom ductwork for residential applications for over 50 years! Unlike the flimsy snap-lock ducts that can be purchased at many home improvement outlets, we use only much sturdier 24-gauge galvanized steel metal, which has a longer life, and reduces airflow and expansion noise.

New or Replacement Gas Furnace Installation

We will recommend and supply a replacement furnace for your home. All of the major furnace brands are available, such as Keeprite, Goodman, Carrier, and Tempstar. Modern gas furnaces are much smaller and significantly more efficient than previously. Condensing furnaces achieve fuel efficiencies of over 97%, which can translate into significant heating cost savings. We remove and properly dispose of your old equipment with reputable local metal recyclers.

Ductwork Upgrade and Replacement

We have seen numerous instances where the originally installed ductwork is inadequate. Often, older furnaces are replaced but the exiting ductwork was not designed to handle the airflow of modern furnaces. This results in the furnace heat exchanger overheating, which greatly shortens the life of the furnace, and higher operating costs and energy bills. Fixing these issues is our specialty.

Hot Water Heaters

We supply and install all types of domestic hot water heaters, including high-efficiency space-saving tankless hot water heaters. Hot water heaters can contribute to significant gas or electric supply costs due to their on-demand advanced technology.

Oil Furnaces

For rural customers that are still heating their homes or outbuildings and greenhouses with oil, we have decades of experience with oil furnaces. We are experts in oil heating systems, and provide oil furnace preventive maintenance inspection and repair services. In cases where the equipment is too old and replacement parts are no longer available, we can supply and install much higher efficiency oil furnaces, with 87% or higher Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency.

Gas Appliance Hookups

While most appliance retailers will provide installation services for gas ovens, ranges, cooktops, barbecues, fireplaces, and dryers, it is the homeowners responsibility to have adequate gas supply lines and exhaust venting in place prior to appliance installation. In some cases, this means upgrading the size of gas lines and ducts. If you are contemplating a new appliance or appliance package, give us a call so that we can best advise you on what needs to be done for your appliances.

Air Conditioning

As with furnaces, modern air conditioning systems provide more efficient operation than older generation systems. Newer systems also use refrigerants that are less harmful to the environment. We supply all major A/C brands and provide high quality A/C installations.

Gas Piping

In many older homes, the existing gas lines are inadequate to supply gas to new appliances. For example, although tankless water heaters operate far more efficiently than hot water tanks, they consume many times more BTU/hr, which in turn may require larger gas lines to the appliance.

Repair and Service

Top-notch service is essential for the reliable and dependable operation of any HVAC system. We service and repair all types of residential HVAC systems. We also offer scheduled inspection and maintenance for your heating and cooling systems to ensure that your equipment is operating properly.

The Importance of Proper HVAC System Design

Whether a new HVAC system is being installed, or an existing systems is being replaced, upgraded, or expanded, we can help with your HVAC system design.

Especially important is the duct design. An optimum design enables proper airflows across the furnace heat exchanger or air conditioner evaporator coil, for proper heat transfer. Unless this is done correctly the air temperature rise across the furnace heat exchanger can be too high, which in turn reduces furnace efficiency, causes a safety hazard, and may trip the over-temperature limits in the furnace. Similarly, poor airflow across an air conditioner cooling coil can result in coil freeze-up.

Both supply air and especially return air ducts must be properly sized to ensure that sufficient heating and cooling is delivered to all spaces. Otherwise, rooms may be too hot or too cold, or basement spaces may be cool and clammy. If the air in a space does not properly circulate, and humidity is properly controlled, conditions may exist to promote the growth of dangerous moulds, especially in basements, or in or on exterior walls.

At Sheridan HVAC, we can provide a detailed system design, with all of the requisite heat loss and heat gain calculations, to reliably predict overall system performance. Furthermore, the design will be suitable for building permit application purposes.

About Air Ducts

In typical residential applications, air ducts supply heated or cooled air to living spaces, and collect return air back to the furnace or heat exchanger. Air ducts are most often fabricated from galvanized sheet metal, in either round or rectangular profiles.

There are several important factors that drive the decision between using round metal ducts and/or rectangular metal ducts for your HVAC system. Your final decision should be based on the specific requirements of your project.

Round Ducts

Round ducts provide greater airflow efficiency than rectangular ducts. Because round ducts have less internal surface area for the equivalent cross-sectional area, friction and turbulent flow is minimized. Lower frictional energy losses can result in significant operational cost savings.

Round ducts work well in plenums and attics, when there is sufficient room. However, ducts located in unconditioned or unheated spaces must be carefully sealed and well-insulated, which can increase up-front costs.

Rectangular Ducts

The advantage of rectangular ducts is that they give more headroom in spaces such as basements. Airflow capacity is primarily determined by the duct cross-sectional area. However, rectangular ducts can result in more turbulence of the airflow, resulting in increased friction and potentially lower efficiency. In order to minimize turbulence, rectangular ducts should be designed and fabricated with smooth turns, to guide the airflow around corners.

The Benefits of a Bypass Plenum

A bypass plenum may be installed to significantly improve airflows during heating seasons. This in turn results in improved furnace operational efficiency and lower costs.

This is especially the case with high-efficiency furnaces and air conditioning systems. The much smaller footprint of these units, which in turn results in smaller plenum duct cross-sectional area, means it is harder for the air to flow. In a typical conventional installation, the air conditioning indoor evaporator coil, typically in an A-configuration, sits atop a shelf inside the plenum above the furnace. A rectangular cutout in the shelf enables supply air to flow from the furnace blower up through the air conditioning coil.

The problem that arises is that the cross-sectional area of the cutout under the coil tends to be much smaller than the size of supply air ducts, resulting in higher static pressures below the coil, and lower blower efficiency. Also, the temperature rise in heating mode tends to be higher due to the airflow restriction, which in turn results in reduced furnace heat exchanger efficiency, and shorter equipment life.

We have seen many cases where the supply air temperatures have been dangerously high after a furnace has been replaced with a new unit, resulting in the furnace shutting itself down due to the high temperature limit being exceeded.

A bypass plenum is wider than a conventional plenum, providing a larger shelf on which the evaporator coil sits. The coil is positioned towards one side of the shelf, and a second cutout is provided for additional airflow that bypasses the coil and its cutout. A manually operated damper is installed over the second bypass cutout, so that this airflow path can be closed during air conditioner operation in summer months.

Keeping Your Air Clean

Maintaining a clean air filtration system is essential to proper airflow and efficient HVAC systems operation. We recommend that conventional furnace filters be replaced every 4 – 6 weeks, depending on the number of people and pets in the home. To save you money, SheridanHVAC can supply you with high-quality furnace filters in bulk.

In both new and replacement furnace installations, if space permits, we recommend installing an electronic air cleaner as well. Ideally, there should be both a conventional filter and an electronic air filter installed, to provide the cleanest possible air.

In situations where a household member has airborne-pathogen allergy issues, we can also supply and install a HEPA level air filter. These filters should be used in combination with a conventional air filter, to extend the useful life of the HEPA filter medium.

An electronic air cleaner, when installed in combination with a conventional filter (pre-filter), should be cleaned using air-cleaner detergent and warm water, at least once per year. Without a pre-filter, we recommend that an electronic air cleaner be cleaned every 60 days.

Heat Recovery Ventilation

In Canada, each new home must have a heat recovery ventilation system. This is necessary because modern homes are built to much higher standards with respect to air leakage, both infiltration and exfiltration.

A HRV unit brings in fresh air from outside and passes it through a heat exchanger. Stale air from inside the home, typically collected from kitchen and bathroom spaces, is also passed through the heat exchanger, but physically isolated from the fresh air. This allows heat contained in stale air to be transferred to the incoming fresh air.

Although older homes may not have been built with the same stringent air leakage requirements of newer homes, installing an HRV in a retrofit situation can provide significant benefits in terms of indoor air quality.

Let Sheridan HVAC determine whether an HRV installation is feasible in your home to enjoy the energy savings and air quality benefits it provides.

Gas Appliance Connections

Gas ranges, gas cooktops, and gas dryers must be properly piped and vented before installation.

When purchasing a gas appliance, most appliance vendors will offer installation and gas hookups. However, the gas lines and shutoffs must be properly sized and installed before appliance installation takes place. In most cases this is the responsibility of the homeowner, or the general contractor.

It is also essential that exhaust vents be properly installed. In many cases, dryer venting must be replaced to meet codes. Similarly, when installing a gas range or gas cooktop, there needs to be proper venting with a range hood.

If you are planning to buy new gas appliances, give Sheridan HVAC a call so that you can best determine the necessary gas line and venting that must be installed prior to appliance installation.

Let's Upgrade your Thermostat

Sheridan HVAC strongly recommends upgrading your thermostat to better control your heating and cooling cycles. There are many smart thermostats available that can be integrated into your smart home system.

One of the most exciting recent developments with smart thermostats is the ability to network-connect the wall-mounted unit to your smart phone or tablet device. The gives you far better, more intuitive program setup. Also, you can remotely control and monitor your HVAC system from anywhere with an Internet or WIFI connection.

Oil Furnaces

In areas where natural gas service is not available, homes, greenhouses, and outbuildings may still be heated with oil furnaces or boilers.

Sheridan HVAC has been installing and servicing oil furnaces for over five decades.

If you have an oil furnace installation and need service or repair, give us a call.

Tankless Water Heaters

Whether you need to replace your existing hot water tank, or are involved with a new construction situation, a tankless on-demand water heater should be considered.

These units provide higher operating efficiency than hot water tanks, and can save you money. You will never run out of hot water.

It should be noted that because tankless units have a much higher BTU/hr rating than hot water tanks, the gas supply line to the unit may require upgrading. Also, these units require exterior venting similar to a high efficiency gas furnace.
